DUST COLLECTOR IMPROVES VISIBILITY

QUEENSLAND ALUMINA LIMITED
GLADSTONE, QUEENSLAND

BACKGROUND

Queensland Alumina Limited was loading and unloading raw product, using front end loaders and tipper trucks into an A-Frame shed which was creating airborne dust within. This dust was causing a dangerous situation for heavy vehicle operators entering the shed due to poor visibility. It was a major health and safety issue.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

The rental of the dust collector would allow better visibility within the shed for loading and unloading of material. Cost was not that important as safety was the main concern. There was a recommendation for a large scale dust collector to remove as much airbourne material as possible.

  • Improve visibility on worksite and for drivers

  • Reduce the amount of dust

  • Maintain project bottom line

RESULTS

A large 60000cfm dust collector installed in a 50ft container was installed on site which enabled 3 air-changes per-hour within the A-Frame structure.

BENEFITS OF BLASTONE’S DUST COLLECTORS:

QAL Dust Collector Case Study2
  • Available from 6,000 cfm to 100,000 cfm
  • Can be trailer mounted or skid mounted
  • 30% extra space between filters, leading to longer filter life
  • High pressure fan included, maintaining long ducting
  • Can be customized with base, engine canopy, and for noise sensitivity

CONCLUSION

Visibility was increased in the shed, thus reducing the chance of serious vehicle accidents. QAL realised that the dust collected within the dust collector was a very high grade product which they could sell on for an increased profit.

Visibility Icon

VISIBILITY

Dust collection units are an important component for blasting site environmental and personnel safety. The removal of dust and other hazardous air particles protects the employees on site, while also preventing harmful contaminates from escaping into the atmosphere without relying on personal respiratory equipment alone.

Health Icon

HEALTH

A dust collector is used to provide ventilation inside containment structures to maintain operator visibility and maintain the encapsulated area under a negative pressure. It is also important to dilute the levels of hazardous substances within the contained area to levels below the minimum requred protection factor for personnel within, as well as respirator equipment limitations.

Environmental Icon

ENVIRONMENTAL

Many older coatings contain a high percentage of lead which when pulverized into powder by abrasive blasting can form a hazardous and toxic dust. Company legal obligations on project sites are now requiring that a full dust-tight containment structure encapsulates all blasting operations to minimize the danger to personnel and the environment.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • How do dust collectors work?

Dust laden air travels down the ductwork and enters into the dirty air inlet plenum at the rear of the dust  collector. Here the heavier particles drop out of the air stream. The air is then drawn through a large bank of high efficiency filter cartridges where the dust is deposited on the outside of the filter cartridges. Filtered air passes through to the clean air plenum and passes through the fan blower to the atmosphere. The cake of dust on the cartridges is dislodged continuously by an automatic reverse pulse jet.

Dust drops into the hopper of the collector and is transferred by a screw conveyor to a conveniently located dust outlet for easy transfer to a receptacle for disposal.

  • Do dust collectors run on diesel or electric?

Some job sites are different to others. Contractors know that they can save a lot of money when the job site has power available. That is why BlastOne offers a bi-powered dust collector. Run it on plant power, generator power, or use the inbuilt diesel engine — it’s your job, your choice.
  • What's more cost effective? Skid or trailer mounted?

The most cost effective option for a mobile dust collector is to mount it on a skid base. The dust collector can either be moved around using a large yard forklift or craned on and off a truck. This option is good for projects which have long durations and the unit isn’t required to move around onsite much at all. The skid has fork pockets, rigging mounts and extendable/collapsible legs to make transportation easy.
  • What are options for mobility?

    Yard Towable Trailer

The next step up in mobility — if you have a long project duration (2+ months), the yard towable trailer gives the ultimate site portability. While it needs to be loaded on a trailer to be delivered to the site, once onsite, it can be moved easily, as required. The ultra-heavy duty wheels & axels will last you many years of hard service.

    Highway Towable Trailer

The ultimate mobility. Perfect for projects that are short in duration (under 2 months). The highway towable trailer means that the dust collection system and power/fan unit are all mounted on a highway certified trailer meaning that the unit can be moved anywhere at any time.
