DO I NEED A SPRAY BOOTH? YOU ASKED, WE ANSWERED!

HOW DO I KNOW I NEED A SPRAY BOOTH?
A spray booth is a reasonably substantial investment (kits start around $10K + GST) so it will be a financial viability exercise to determine whether it makes economic sense. There are no halfway measures with regards to infrequent or occasional use; a spray booth needs to include certain details or it does not comply. However, the convenience of having an in-house facility usually out-weighs the inconvenience of not having one. The threshold of feasibility is usually a usage of 1 – 2 days per week.

IS A SPRAY BOOTH A HAZARDOUS ZONE?
The spraying area of a booth is a Zone 1 Class 1 Hazardous Zone. This Haz Zone also extends 2.0m outside any opening into the booth work area. This needs to be considered when allocating space for a spray booth as all standard electrical switches, outlets and equipment, as well as all ‘Hot Works’, must be outside this zone.

HOW BIG DO I NEED MY SPRAY BOOTH?
As with most facilities the aim is to accommodate at least 80% of your workpieces, and it is important that the workpiece is fully within the booth work area. It is recommended to have at least 1.0 – 1.5m horizontal, and 1.0m vertical, clearance around an item to provide suitable access and ‘standoff’ distance. Larger internal area is needed for enclosed booths as an open front booth provides access to the job.

HOW MUCH ROOM DO I NEED FOR A SPRAY BOOTH OR PAINTING AREA?
In addition to the footprint of the work area the exhaust plenum takes up an addition 1.0 – 1.5m in length. If doors are fitted then space is needed to open them. The extension of the hazardous zone also needs to be considered. And if a booth is larger than 6.0m in height or width it may need another PA door, so an exit path needs to be considered.

WHAT TYPE OF BOOTH OR SPRAYING AREA DO I NEED?
The type of booth most suitable for your type of work can be dictated by a couple of basic factors and relates mainly to the type of product you paint, and the finish required. This can be decided as follows:

  • Regular industrial/machinery finish: Open faced; negative pressure – View More

  • Small to large easily-moved items within a workshop: Fixed Booth – View More

HOW DO I COMPLY TO REGULATIONS?

  • All spray booths are to be designed and manufactured in accordance with AS4114.1 and documentation is to be provided to confirm this. All spray booths are to be installed and maintained in accordance with AS4114.2. The installer is to provide confirmation of the installation, and the operator is to confirm compliance of the maintenance. maintenance record templates are contained in the manual.
  • Designated painting areas are not as closely specified in the standard so the hazardous area classification and compliance should be assessed on a case-by-case basis by an auditor.

HOW LONG DO THE FILTERS LAST?

  • Exhaust filters: The purpose of exhaust filters is to catch overspray, which is essentially wasted paint. As the paint is intended to be applied to the workpiece, under regular conditions it is expected filters will need changing 1 – 4 times a year. If they are needing to be changed more regularly than this, then your paint application methods and equipment set-up may need reviewing.
  • Intake filters: The purpose of intake filters is to capture airborne particles and dust from entering the booth work area and contaminating the paint job. Unless the outside environment is extra dusty these will need changing every 12 – 18 months.

WHAT OTHER THINGS DO I NEED TO KNOW?

  • A complying spray booth needs to be fitted with an exhaust stack that discharges vertically, and 3.0m above the roofline.
  • A complying spray booth needs to be interlocked with the spray painting equipment. The control cubicle does this – View More
  • Spray painting equipment is required. This is not considered an integral part of a spray booth and is to be sourced separately. d. An air compressor is required. This is not considered an integral part of a spray booth and is to be sourced separately.

FAQ’s

What sizes do fixed spray booths come in?
MASTERFLO spray booths are made from modular systems in both height, width & depth, so practically any size is available in 1.0m increments. From the tips on here calculate what size you need and there will be a unit close to these in the table on here.

Do spray booths have lighting?
Surface mounted lights are available and can be fitted anywhere – ceiling, cornice or walls.

How do you protect the walls from overspray?
A strippable coating is available for any booth, whereby it is applied first when the booth is new. When the walls become covered with overspray you simply peel off and re-apply.

Do they comply to Australian Standards – AS4114?
They comply in every respect, including design, materials and manufacture. However, the installation and maintenance also needs to be carried out in accordance with AS4114, and this is the responsibility of the owner/operator.

Are spray booths difficult to assemble?
The MASTERFLO spray booth is a pre-engineered modular system that arrives to site as a kit with a comprehensive assembly and operator’s manual. Standard trade skills are required to assemble the booth, with special skills needed for:

  • Wiring up the electrical components and connecting it to 3-phase power.
  • Weather-proofing any building penetrations.
  • Working at heights.

Do they come with a single-phase motor?
Due to the required wiring compliance of the motor single phase fans are NOT available.

If I get an open front booth can I fit intake filter doors later?
Certainly. The door system is so designed that they are a simple ‘add-on’ to the booth. This applies to both the MASTERFLO (fixed) and MASTREFLEX (retractable) systems.

MASTERFLO Bench Booths come in two sizes – 1.0m wide & 2.0m wide.

Do they Comply to AS4114?
Certainly. But only when the control cubicle is fitted.

How much weight can the bench take?
The standard bench will take up to 5kg; A heavyduty bench is optional and will take up to 50kg.

Do they have lighting?
Lighting is an option and is definitely worth the cost.

Large Assembly Workflow

A large portable building hire company in western Sydney needed a solution to their challenge of painting large assemblies whilst not only keeping the facility compact but also aligning with the workflow of their production and refurbishment process.

Their main aim was containment of the painting process and continuity of workflow.

BlastOne designed, manufactured and installed this Large Open Faced Spray Booth that incorporated sidewall doors enabling the portable building to enter from the RHS and exit through the LHS, creating the perfect ‘Flow-Thru’ facility.

Dual Spray Booth/Prep Booth Solution

When Sherrin Rentals, a national plant and machinery hire company, needed a solution for the surface preparation and painting requirements in their new Brisbane workshop BlastOne provided the perfect offer.

We were engaged through a Concept and Design Engineering (CaDE) contract to formulate a system that would be serviceable yet flexible for the many demands that were encountered daily.

The result was the supply and Installation of this dual spray booth/prep booth system with an adjoining paint mixing room the included LED wall lighting, intake filter doors to the front and an wet and dry particle exhaust filter system.

Enclosed spray booth for expanding pump manufacturer

When Truflo Pumps, a leading pump manufacturer in regional NSW, needed additional capacity to handle fast growing production demands they engaged BlastOne to utilise an adjacent storage area to install this Spray Booth.

The design neatly fitted within the existing workshop and placed it near to their manufacturing area immediately increasing output efficiencies.

The BlastOne design included Intake Filter Doors, LED Lighting, Fan Silencer and Exhaust Ducting that truncated behind the overhead crane rail to maintain its travel range over the booth. Another fully compliant and successful project by the BlastOne Team.

FILTER WALL SYSTEMS

The compact design of the MASTERFLO Filter Wall Systems provides good directional airflow through spray painting workshops where the nature of the components to be painted makes using a spray booth impractical!

FAQ’s

How well do filter walls ventilate the area?
MasterFlo Filter Walls help in creating ‘directional airflow’ through the work area. It is therefore important that ‘make-up air’ is allowed into that work area, and enters ‘opposite’ the Filter Walls. Providing the work area is between the extraction system and the air inlets, the area will ventilate, regardless of how long it is. This is the best arrangement for ventilating large Designated Painting Areas (DPAs).

How big should the filter wall be?
The MASTERFLO Filter Wall System should be as wide as the DPA and as high as the workpiece. To achieve ventilation over the width of the work area Filter Walls can be either banked together or spaced apart. However, due to gravity it is often not necessary to have the Filter Wall higher than 6.0m high, as large workpieces are likely to be in large work areas, and overspray mostly falls to the floor within 6 – 8m from where it is produced.

How well does the filter work?
Due to gravity making the overspray fall out within 6 – 8m often not much of it will reach the filters. As a result, it may appear that the filters are not capturing much of the overspray. However, this is because it is mostly on the floor. This does not mean filters are not needed. Every spray painting area ventilation system needs filters.

What sizes do Filter Walls come in?
MASTERFLO Filter Walls are made from modular systems in both height and width, so practically any size is available in 1.0m increments. From the tips on here calculate what size you need and there will be a unit close to these in the table on here.

Do they comply to Australian Standards – AS4114?
With Designated Painting Areas compliance relates to the whole area – not just the Filter Walls. The Filter Walls comply in every respect, including design, materials and manufacture. However, to gain full compliance for your DPA it may require Classification & Auditing, which BlastOne offers as an additional service.
Note: Compliance is still the responsibility of the facility owner/operator.

Case Study #1

Large designated painting area for aircraft refinishing
MAF or Mission Aviation Fellowship is an international Christian organisation whose purpose is to bring help, hope and healing through aviation to people living in isolation and poverty.

Every six minutes an MAF aircraft takes off or lands somewhere in the world, transporting people who live in remote villages and assisting missions, churches, aid and development agencies and others working to transform the lives of communities that are cut off from the outside world.

They therefore have many aircraft to service and maintain.

MAF reached out to BlastOne in early 2021 enquiring how to go about fitting hangars in Mareeba (near Cairns, Qld) out as a spray booth which was 24m wide x 15m deep x 6m high.

The BlastOne Design Team worked with MAF and their builder to implement a Designated Painting Area (DPA) which included the Supply of the following Equipment and Services.

  1. 4 x MASTERFLO 5040D Filter Walls: Plenum units being 5m wide x 4m high fitted with high-efficiency filter, dual fans and silencers.
  2. 125 x Intake Filter Panels: These were made to exact size to fit into a unique folding door system that allowed the complete workarea to open for large aircraft.
  3. Hazardous Area Classification and Audit: A professional review and sign-off of the facility provided by our contract electrical engineer.

All equipment was supplied in documented kitform and seamlessly installed by the builder’s on-site team with remote support from BlastOne.

AIR INTAKE LOUVRE & FILTER UNITS

To guarantee Consistent and Effective Directional Airflow install Air Intake Louvres into the wall opposite the MASTERFLO Filter Walls.
To improve the quality of air entering the painting area it is recommended Air Intake Filter Panels be mounted onto the inside of the Louvres which will remove any airborne particle from the make-up air.

RETRACTABLE SPRAY BOOTHS

The MASTRE-FLEX retractable work area system is the ideal solution to painting heavy, hard-to-manage work pieces. The whole work area can be simply folded away and pulled around the item, once it has been craned into position.
MASTRE-FLEX is also the answer to that ‘occasionaluse’ situation as it is simply folded away leaving that valuable work area for other work processes

FAQ’s

How long does the sheeting last?
It will last for many years. The strippable coating is supplied with every booth, which is first applied when the booth is new. When the sheeting becomes covered with overspray you simply peel off and reapply. Also, (it is not 100% puncture proof) but has a re-inforcing grid of ¾”/20mm sq which stops cuts from travelling. The sheeting can be replaced, but note, it doesn’t come under much stress as mostly it would only be pulled in and out 2 – 5 times a day and the folds are not ‘creased’, only loosely folded.

How strong is the frame?
The framework is made from 50×25 RHS and 25×25 RHS meaning at every module join you effectively have a 50×50 post with a cross stiffener. The frame members are connected with 10mm pins which have little or no load on them. All designs are fully engineered. For larger booths larger framing may be required.

How big can you go?
We haven’t done our biggest booth yet! 6.0m high is no problem, and 12.0m Wide is available with some additional engineering.
For larger booths heavier-duty wheels are used, as well as double wheels; a standard wheel takes 75kg each which is over and above any required load.

Can you install heating in a Retractable Booth?
Due to the work area being retractable, noninsulated and not sealed to the floor it is not considered practical to fit heating.

Do they comply?
They comply in every respect. The plenum section is identical to a fixed spray booth; as is the airflow, switchboard and electrics, discharge stack, filters, etc.
The Australian standards says materials ‘should not support combustion’ which the Sheeting complies with. The Sheeting is rated FRAS – Flame Retardant Antistatic.
The only thing you need to consider is that due to the sheeting not being sealed to the floor the Hazardous Zone extends for the full length of the booth, not just the open front. (In Australia/New Zealand this is 2m radius).

How much are they?
They are around the same price as a fixed booth. They are not a ‘cheap option’. They are ‘a tool for a use’ and are to be considered for their features and advantages.

Why buy a Retractable Booth? The main reason clients install a Retractable Booth is for use with overhead or mobile lifting equipment. Items can be easily placed into position when the booth is retracted, and the work area simply pulled over it. A secondary reason is that the client must have a booth but only uses it occasionally.

What is a Water Wash extraction system?
The NIAGARA Spray Booth System utilises a High- Vacuum Exhaust Fan to draw air and water up through a series of internal ducts that create a ‘water turbulence’ that washes the extracted air of any particle. The water is then dropped out in the head of the Extraction Plenum and flows down the front of the plenum to produce a water curtain, and cascading filter wall.

When would I need a Water Wash Booth?
The NIAGARA Spray Booth System will capture both wet and dry particles making it not only suitable for paint, but also powdercoating, sanding, grinding and any dust extraction application. They are also ideal where high levels of overspray may be present, so they may be a requirement in some instances. Talk to your expert BlastOne representative to clarify your requirements.

What sizes do booths come in?
NIAGARA Spray Booths are also made from Modular Systems, so most sizes are available. However, they are not made higher than 3.0mH so talk to your expert BlastOne representative to clarify your requirements.

Are they difficult to assemble?
The NIAGARA Spray Booth Plenum is fully fabricated in the workshop and the work area simply mounts off the front. However, they must be level and suitable handling equipment is needed for installation.

Do they come with a Single-Phase Motor?
Due to the required capacity of the motor, Single Phase Fans are NOT available.

WATER WASH SPRAY BOOTH

The NIAGARA Water Wash Spray Booth System remains the complete solution to overspray filtration. The filter system consists of a full height water curtain which continually captures the airborne particles and sends them through second-stage water turbulence.

All components and work area are constructed from strong, durable materials resulting in a long-lasting, modular and low maintenance piece of equipment. Because of the versatility of this design these booths have been used for spray painting, powder coating, stone and metal grinding to name few.

FEATURES OF THE NIAGARA

DOUBLE WATER CURTAIN
The NIAGARA design has improved conditions for the operator with the addition of a second extraction slot within the operator breathing zone. This new slot provides a more even flow through the booth in the areas that is most needed.

REDUCED MAINTENANCE
The NIAGARA Water Wash Booth is a pump-less system without filters, screens and nozzles. Access for cleaning is from the front of the booth via removal of the water walls and the eliminator doors. No tools are required and in most cases the operation can be performed by one person.

BETTER WATER WASHING
The first point of filtration occurs at the full width suction slots in the water wall – one (1) in the operators breathing zone and one (1) at the water line. The second point of filtration occurs in the entrainment (or water washing) ducts. These ducts located behind the water wall, are specially designed to remove airborne particles from the airstream. The third stage of filtration takes place within the booths header chamber where the last of the water is removed from the exhausting airstream.

LONGER WORKING LIFE
The NIAGARA Water Wash Spray Booth is constructed entirely from minimum 1.0mm thick galvanised sheet-metal. This inhibits the spread of corrosion, makes for sturdy construction, and thus reduces any downtime due to maintenance.

EASE OF INSTALLATION
The booth, subject to your individual requirements, can be supplied as a completed unit requiring only the fitting of the fan, flue, sheet metal work area and connection to the power and water supply.

Every Spray Booth is supplied with a comprehensive instruction and maintenance manual including a service with all replacement parts.

What sizes do curing oven spray booths come in?
MASTERFLO Positive Pressure/Temperature Controlled Spray Booths are custom made to your specific requirements and to suit the workpieces and production flows of the particular facility. From the tips on here, calculate what size you need and/or talk to a consultant.

How are they heated?
A number of different energy sources can be used to heat a spray booth. These range from gas, electricity or diesel. The most efficient and commonly used medium is gas.

  • Gas (either natural or LPG) is the most economical heating medium. The heating is provided by a burner which can transfer heat to the incoming air via a Direct or Indirect design. Direct burners are the most efficient.
  • Electric burners are convenient if a constant supply is available at very low cost. However, they are more costly to manufacture and are slower to come up to temperature.
  • Diesel burners are also feasible if a reliable and cost-effective supply is available. However, this is often a challenge and consequently they are not well serviced, or commonly used.

How do I control humidity?
Humidity is ‘Relative Humidity’; this means it is relative to the temperature. Therefore, under most normal climatic conditions the high RH is adjusted by increasing the temperature, which is easily done by including a burner in the design. See previous question.
If the next level of control is required then a humidifier/de-humidifier system can be included in the design.

Can they be built fully above ground?
There are two (2) types of Airflow Designs that can be built without any in-ground works:

  • Semi-Down Draft: This design is for Stop- End Booths whereby the booth is exhausted through the rear wall and replacement air enters through the ceiling at the front. This produces a horizontal airflow direction.
  • Side-Down Draft: This design is for both Stop- End and Drive-Thru Booths whereby the booth is exhausted through the lower section of the side walls and replacement air enters through the centre of the ceiling. This produces a vertical airflow direction.
    NOTE: Full Down Draft designs require either an in-ground Pit or an Elevated Floor.

Do they comply to Australian Standards – AS4114?
They comply in every respect, including design, materials and manufacture. However, the installation and maintenance also needs to be carried out in accordance with AS4114, and this is the responsibility of the owner/operator.

Are they available as in kit form?
Due to the complexities involved in design and configuration of the ventilation system including the temperature control system, balancing the airflow and controlling spray and bake modes, BlastOne only supplies these designs as a turnkey project.

Spray booth for earthmoving equipment production

Hitachi Australia, one of Australia’s leading earthmoving machinery manufacturers, required a spray painting facility that would be operational all day, every day, and with the versatility of handling anything from small parts to completely assembled equipment.

The booth needed to be easily accessible and operate compliantly near the main workshops.

The BlastOne Design & Engineering Team were engaged to install and commission this temperature controlled spray booth that includes integration with the workshop building, as well as a centre dividing door that can split the booth into two independently operated workareas. Complete with adjoining Paint Mixing and Storage Rooms this facility is the optimum in high quality spray painting.

Large spray booth with roof access for overhead handling

When this Mining Equipment manufacturer needed a Painting Booth with special requirements BlastOne was their choice to make it happen. The complexities of a Positive Pressure and heated workarea needed to be coupled with large front and roof access. All this, as well as keep the whole construction under the overhead crane system and be Australian Standards compliant.

Being situated inside the main workshop also meant the noise output levels needed to be kept to a minimum.

Why would I install a Paint Mixing Room?
A Paint Mixing Room provides a clean and enclosed environment for the preparation of paint prior to spraying it onto the job – (mixing, thinning, tinting, straining etc). It can also provide a confined and tidy workarea for spray equipment clean-up and servicing.

What is different or unique about a Paint Mixing Room?
A Paint Mixing Room is a Hazardous Zone so it needs ventilation and interlocking to ensure it is a safe area to work. Although ventilation is imperative, the capacity required is much less than a spray booth.

Do they comply to Australian Standards – AS/NZS 4114?
A Paint Mixing Room needs to comply to AS/NZS 4114 in every respect, including design, materials and manufacture, and are very similar to Spray Booths.

What special considerations are there with Paint Mixing Rooms?

  1. The lighting is interlocked with the Exhaust Fan to ensure nothing happens inside without the Exhaust System operating.
  2. It is recommended a Paint Mixing room adjoins a Spray Booth to enable direct access from one to the other. This ensures the clean environment can be maintained and contained. However, it is still necessary to have an access door for external access and emergency escape.

By far the easiest way to set up a spray painting facility on site is to utilise a MASTERFLO Container Spray Booth. What does the Control Cubicle do?
The Control Cubicle (CC) has a number of main functions.

  • It interlocks the operations of the Spray Painting Equipment with the Exhaust Fan to ensure Spraying cannot be carried out without the correct Ventilation.
  • It controls a Pre-Purge Mode which proves the Ventilation System is operating correctly before the Spraying process can start.
  • It controls a Post-Purge Mode which evacuates all Volatile and Toxic Fume before it shuts down.

It includes a Fault Alarm System to alert the Operator of any malfunction and shut down the Spraying operation.

Do I need a Control Cubicle?
A Spray Booth or Filter Wall system is not compliant to AS/NZS4114 unless the functions a Control System offers is included.

How many Control Cubicles are required for any System?

  • Spray Booths: For Spray Booths only One (1) x Control Cubicle is required regardless of how much Equipment is included.
  • Filter Wall Systems: For Filter Wall Systems it may be more practical to control them in sets. We recommend having a maximum of Four (4) x Filter Walls in One (1) System. This will be assessed on an individual situation basis.

Can they be Retro-Fitted onto an existing Spray Booth?
There would need to be a thorough review of the existing System to clarify but generally it can be done. Other factors will need to be clarified to assess whether this brings the Spray Booth into line with current Australian Standards requirements.

CONTROL CUBICLES

To comply with Australian Standards AS/NZ 4114, control cubicles must be installed to all spray booths.
Control Cubicles are installed to a spray booth for safety reasons, as they perform the following functions:

  • An electrical solenoid connected into the booth’s compressed air line stops the operator / painter from spraying any product inside of the booth until such time that the air flow / exhaust fan speed is high enough for any waste product to be removed from the workspace. This is known as the pre-purge phase.
  • Timers incorporated into the control cubicle will not allow the fans to shut off until they have removed all over-spray and fumes that are still within the booth. This is known as the post-purge phase.
  • When the booth is switched off the compressed air supply to the spray gun(s) is closed off stopping the painter from spraying. (As the air within the booth is being purged).
  • All electrical supplies to the booth are also switched on and off via the control panel. A main switch will shut down the complete system if required.
  • Fault lights and alarms fitted alert the operator to any malfunction giving peace of mind that everything is covered.
  • A printed circuit diagram is always included inside every switchboard (as well as in the operation manual) ready for the electrician if required.
