BACKGROUND
A shipyard in the Northeastern United States had a large project on their hands: they needed to blast clean two ocean barges, amounting to approximately 110,000 ft2 of steel, to an industry SP-6 standard. Their typical approach would be extremely inefficient due to low jobsite visibility, abrasive supply bottlenecks, and massive disposal costs for spent abrasive.

SOLUTION
BlastOne demonstrated how blast cleaning with GMA Garnet improves worksite visibility through lower dust emissions, due to its inherent material toughness and rapid settling (high specific gravity).
Using bulk bags of GMA Garnet for the project would reduce the various abrasive supply bottlenecks they would typically run into while waiting for multiple bulk tanker shipments each day.
GMA Garnet’s abrasive recycling program would also eliminate the costs associated with abrasive disposal.

RESULTS
For this project, the shipyard blasted with GMA ToughBlast GX2 Garnet abrasive with staggering results. They saw a 39% increase in production rates, while using 69% less abrasive during the course of the project.
The lower consumption levels of abrasive also meant the operators did not have to halt production every two hours to refill the pots. This improvement, combined with the overall higher performance of the abrasive, allowed the shipyard to finish the project ahead of schedule.
Each flatbed truck bearing a new shipment of garnet would load up any spent abrasive from the jobsite to be sent back to GMA’s Fairless Hills processing plant for recycling, which effectively eliminated any abrasive disposal costs for the project.
Open air blasting – Blasting with garnet produced much lower dust levels than normal. This improved visibility for the operators, which allowed them to work more effectively.
